New energy investment strengthens Power Coast - EPV plans power plant in Kotka
Energy company EPV Energia is planning to build a motor power plant in Kotka’s Mussalo industrial area. We at Cursor consider the project to be a significant investment for the functionality of the energy system in the Kotka-Hamina region and for the development of the area.
The planned power plant would consist of several gas engines and have a total electrical capacity of around 40-45 MW.
According to Jarkko Harjula, Senior Advisor at Cursor, the project will strengthen the energy infrastructure in the region and support the business environment.
– The project will strengthen the development of the region’s energy infrastructure and support industrial security. Security of electricity supply and sufficient capacity are key factors for the competitiveness of existing companies in the region and for decisions on where to locate new investments,” says Harjula.
– A motor power plant will also bring significant flexibility to the electricity system. It will enable a rapid response to fluctuations in consumption and production,” he continues.
According to Harjula, the project will also have wider regional economic impacts.
– The project will have a positive impact on regional development and also a significant direct employment impact during the construction of the power plant.
The City of Kotka and EPV Energia have signed a preliminary agreement to reserve approximately 0.9 hectares of land in the Mussalo industrial area for a power plant. The reservation period is one year.
It is estimated that the project will take around two years to obtain a permit and technical design, after which the actual investment decision will be taken. Construction is estimated to take about two years. Once completed, the power plant will provide employment, particularly in operation and maintenance.
Kotka was chosen as the location for the project because of its ready industrial infrastructure, with a gas transmission network and an electricity access point already in place.
EPV Energia produces and purchases electricity and heat for domestic energy companies that own the company. The company was founded in 1952.
