Google's New Major Investment Solidifies Hamina's Position as a Pioneer in Data Center Operations
Google plans to invest more than 13 billion euros in new digital infrastructure in Finland in 2027–2028. This is Google’s largest single investment in Europe. The investments will support the company’s strong growth in Finland and Hamina, where Google’s data center operations began in 2009.
The partnership between Google and Hamina has a history spanning more than 15 years. In 2009, Google purchased a former paper mill in Hamina and converted it into a data center, which has since been expanded in several phases. The investment plans announced now continue this long-term development.

The impact of Google’s operations in Hamina extends beyond direct jobs. Between 2023 and 2025, Google’s operations in Hamina supported a network of more than 600 Finnish subcontractors in the fields of construction, operations, and network infrastructure. The construction and operation of the data center will generate demand for a broad network of companies and services, while strengthening the region’s expertise and business community.
At the same time, Google is strengthening its commitment to local communities and skills development. Together with EKAMI, the company is launching a skills development program aimed at training up to 100 local students for roles in the data center industry over the course of the year.
Added value from Hamina for all of Finland
Cursor and the City of Hamina view Google’s strong growth in Hamina as evidence of the Kotka-Hamina region’s ability to attract and facilitate internationally significant investments and, through them, bring tangible added value to all of Finland.
The economic impact of Google’s 13-billion-euro investment package is significant. According to Google’s estimates, the first phase of the investments in 2027–2028 will increase Finland’s gross domestic product by an average of 3.6 billion euros per year and create more than 37,000 jobs. Once the investments are completed, their employment impact is estimated to be 7,000 jobs per year.

The Kotka-Hamina region is currently attracting an exceptionally large number of other industrial and technological investments and investment plans. Alongside the data economy, the region is developing into a hub for the battery industry and new clean energy solutions. Google’s long-term growth in Hamina is helping to strengthen the region’s position as a destination for international investment.
The City of Hamina and Cursor will continue their close collaboration with Google to support the company’s growth. The shared goal is to ensure that the opportunities created by these investments can be leveraged as fully as possible in Hamina, the Kotka-Hamina region, and throughout Finland.
